How to care for the tightly curly hair that many of us of African descent have, and how to grow it very long. Caring for our hair doesn't have to cost a fortune. You just need to know a few simple rules to make it happy.
I hated my hair until I figured it out. Now I cherish it.

My name is Teri. I came by my super-curly hair being half black and half white, and my biracial hair is so curly it catches around buttons, sequins, and other people’s watches. I spent my entire life struggling with my super curly hair. I read countless books and articles, tried countless products and asked dozens of professionals to help manage my hair. None of the books, articles, products or people helped. Even books that specifically said they were for tightly curled, “kinky” hair all seemed to give about the same advice, and none of it worked. So I began to try to figure out what my hair needed on my own. It took lots of searching and experimenting, but I finally figured it out. I went from short, crunchy hair that always felt more like a nest than hair, to long happy spirals that fall down to my butt.

This site is devoted to helping others struggling with their tight coils. Treated correctly, those curls can become your unique trademark, and your friend.

I didn’t want anyone else to suffer for thirty years with their hair when they don’t have to. I am working on a book on how to care for tightly curly hair, but I wanted to make some of this information available to those searching online.

*I had called this site Biracial Hair because this is the type of hair I have. However, all curlies and those who love them are welcome here.*

The information on this site is a brief overview of all that I've discovered in my struggles to grow my tightly curled hair long. The majority of my information will be in my book tenatively called Curly Like Me, (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). It will have about 250 b&w photos and 22 illustrations.

If you'd like an email when it's coming out, feel free to let me know and I'll let you know when it's available.

Sometimes it might take me a few days to write back, but I do my best to answer every email sent to me.

Come check out my blog: Notes of a Former Mushroom-Haired Child. It's about about my tightly curly and biracial hair, the journey of writing, the products I've tried that didn't make it to the Recommended Products page, and all the embarrassing stuff in between.

Site Updates:

*Due to a change in ingredients, I had to remove my favorite combing conditioner on the Recommended Combing Conditioners page.

I added a sort of new rinsing conditioner to the Recommended Rinsing Conditioners page (I had already mentioned it as a light combing conditioner, but lately I'm been using it as a rinser).

*Two photos of my hair after being in the wind all day, on day 6 after washing, on the Hair Shots page.

*New link added on the Community page.

*My very first How-To video is on the site! This shows how I define my curls after washing, conditioning, and combing them. You can check it out on the Curly Primer page.

*New page added for tips growing out your chemicals and heat-damaged hair: Before & After photos added, including photos showing how to define shorter curls.

*Two illustrations added in Tips for Little Ones to show different ways a child's hair can be put up at night.

Coming Soon:

*A video page, where all the upcoming how-to videos will live.

*More How To Videos, including installments that show me going through the entire process of how I do my hair (I'm working on this now).

*Ask Teri page which shows my answers to hair questions I'm asked (so you can get instant answers).

*A publication date for the book. I'm getting my edited manuscript back from Wiley this week (yay!...and gulp!).

*Product Reviews page.
